YARN

I used Bernat Softee Cotton to make the bag pictured but you can substitute with the yarn of your choice. Yardage will vary depending on bag size and yarn type

HOOK

I used a 4.5 mm  hook but you can use whatever hook size works best with your yarn choice.

ADDITIONAL SUPPLIES

  • Yarn Needle
  • Scissors

NOTES

  • This pattern is written to change yarn in each row.
  • Beginning chain may or may not count as a stitch
  • Stitches will be worked in between dc clusters unless otherwise noted in the pattern

ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)

  • slst – Slipstitch
  • ch – Chain
  • sc – Single Crochet
  • dc – Double Crochet

DIMENSIONS

This bag is fully customizable, you can make it as large as you like and adjust the strap size to suit your need.

PATTERN

Ch 28, or any multiple of 3 + 1

ROW 1

  • 3 dc into the 3rd ch from your hook (beginning ch 2 counts as first dc)
  • *skip next 2 stitches, 3 dc into next stitch*
  • Repeat from * to * across until 1 stitch remains
  • dc in last stitch
  • Fasten off

ROW 2

Row 1 started and ended with a single dc, those dc’s will become your corners, you will work your stitches into the space between the dc and the 3 dc cluster.

  • Join your next colour into the space between the beginning dc and the 3 dc cluster in the previous row
  • ch 2 (counts as beginning dc)
  • Continuing in the same space, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc
  • 3 dc in the space between clusters across until you reach the space between the last dc and 3 dc cluster
  • 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc into that space
  • Now you will be working along the bottom of the previous row, 3 dc in the space between clusters across
  • slst to top of beginning ch 2
  • Fasten off

You should now have 4 visible corners, your base should look like this at the end of Row 2:

ROW 3 – 4

  • Join your next colour in any corner
  • ch 2 (counts as beginning dc)
  • In the same space, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc

Continue working around, placing 3 dc in each space until you reach a corner, in each corner 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc

  • slst to top of beginning ch 2, fasten off.

Your base should look like this at the end of Row 3:

If you would like a larger base for your bag, you can continue to repeat Row 3 until your base reaches your desired size. If you choose to increase the row count for the base, please note that when you continue to the body of the bag, you will then move on to Row 5.

ROW 5

  • Join your next colour in any space that isn’t a corner
  • ch 2 (counts as beginning dc), 2 dc

Continue working around, place 3 dc in each space, including the corner spaces (increases are no longer required)

  • slst to top of beginning ch 2, fasten off.

Repeat Row 5 until your bag reaches your desired height.

Instructions are provided below for either a single strap finish or a two handle finish

*Please note that the stitch counts for the two handle finish are based on beginning your bag with a 28 chain AND ending your base at Row 4 (90 stitches around), if you have changed either of these things, you will have to figure out your own stitch count to make two handles.
