Granny Square Cross Body Bag

Materials

You can use any yarn/hook you like. To make the bag pictured I used The Cotton from We Are Knitters and a 5mm hook.

Notes

  • Beginning chain may or may not count as a stitch.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • slst – Slip Stitch 
  • ch – Chain 
  • sc – Single Crochet 
  • dc – Double Crochet

Dimensions

This bag is fully customizable, you can make it as large as you like and adjust the strap size to suit your need.

Pattern

GRANNY SQUARE – MAKE 2

Ch 4, slst to beginning ch to form a ring

ROW 1

  • ch 2 (counts as beginning dc)
  • 2 dc into ring, ch 2
  • (3 dc into ring, ch 2) 3 times
  • slst to top of beginning ch 2 (12 dc, 4 ch 2 spaces)

ROW 2

*All stitches will now be worked into ch spaces unless noted. 

  • slst over next 2 stitches and into the first space
  • In the first ch space, ch 2 (counts as beginning dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1 
  • In each remaining ch space, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1
  • slst to top of beginning ch 2 (24 dc, 4 ch 2 spaces, 4 ch 1 spaces)

ROW 3

  • slst over next 2 stitches and into the first space
  • In the first ch space, ch 2 (counts as beginning dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1 
  • *In next ch space 3 dc, ch 1
  • In next ch space, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1*
  • Repeat from * to * 2 times
  • In the last ch space 3 dc, ch 1
  • slst to top of beginning ch 2 (36 dc, 4 ch 2 spaces, 8 ch 1 spaces)

ROW 4 – 6

  • slst over next 2 stitches and into the first space
  • In the first ch space, ch 2 (counts as beginning dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1 
  • *3 dc, ch 1 in each ch space until you reach the corner ch space
  • In corner ch space, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1*
  • Repeat from * to * 2 times
  • 3 dc, ch 1 in each ch space until you reach the end of the row
  • slst to top of beginning ch 2 

*You can continue on with the repeated rows to make a larger bag or fasten off.

JOINING YOUR SQUARES

Put squares together, right sides facing out, Sc around 3 sides, going through both squares to join, leaving one side open. Fasten off

TOP OF BAG

ROW 1

Join yarn to top of bag, above the seam on one side, sc around the top of the bag, join with slst. 

ROW 2 – 5

  • ch 1
  • sc in each stitch around
  • join to with slst to beginning sc

STRAP

Ch 180 (or desired amount to change the length of the strap) join with slst to opposite side of bag, slst back over the chains of the strap and join with slst to beginning. Fasten off.
